Description

Situated in the heart of the Penedes in north-eastern Spain, Can Sumoi is producing excellent natural high-altitude wines with only indigenous varieties. Can Sumoi is a collaboration between Pepe Raventos and Francesc Escala, old childhood friends who are also involved in Pepe's family estate, Raventos i Blanc. Pepe has long had a passion for natural wines, and it was that desire that lead the duo to the Can Sumoi vines. The 400-hectare estate of Can Sumoi dates back to the 17th century and sits at six hundred meters asl in the Serra de l'Home range. Its 350-year-old farmhouse and stone walls are surrounded by 20 hectares of old Montonega, Xarel-lo and Sumoll vines; woods of oak and white pine shade the rest of the property.

The vines – averaging 50 years of age – are cultivated on limestone soils in certified-organic fashion and the resulting wines are produced without additives, stabilisation or filtration (although no sulphur is added, trace amounts remain in the wines as natural fermentation by-product). Harvest is done manually and all pressings take place in the cellar. They work carefully with inert gas to avoid any oxidation and bottling all takes place in small batches. The resultant wines show low alcohol and a refreshing acidity throughout. In addition to their careful work in the vineyard, biodynamic agriculture and sustainable forest management help to promote the flora and fauna of the Penedes.

This is is a juicy red wine with an intense nose of wild fruits and Mediterranean forest herbs. On the palate it is fine, light and elegant. A wine with a good amount of fruit on the palate, a long finish and a present acidity that will leave you wanting more.
